Sony PlayStation 4 (Slim)

Sony PS4 Slim review – The new standard PlayStation 4 console, casually known as the PS4 Slim, is the best version of its ilk. But with the more powerful PS4 Pro available in stores offering 4K and HDR gaming and Xbox Scorpio out this year, is it worth...

Incredibly quiet ; Much more energy efficient ; Looks lovely ; Easier to expand HDD space

Controller analogue sticks still not durable enough ; The PS4 Pro makes this a tough sell to dedicated fans

It’s tempting to see the PS4 as a ‘jam tomorrow’ console, with the Xbox One delivering jam today. However, there’s more than enough third-party jam to make you glad you bought one now, while tomorrow’s jam does look very, very tasty indeed.

PS4 Slim review: it’s the same gaming platform you're used to, and that’s no bad thing

Quieter, cooler and thinner, the new PlayStation 4 plays it safe with surprisingly satisfying results

Great gaming platform ; Good value for money ; Controller could be best ever

Optical audio port removed ; Still not sure on aesthetics

Sony PS4 review: The entry-level PlayStation 4 with HDR thrills

The standard PS4 is a cheap and cheerful games console capable of playing many games in HDR. It might not have the resolution boost or power of the

Small and easy to hide out of the way ; DualShock 4 controller has USB communication ; Easy to swap out the internal hard drive ; Capable of HDR gaming

Not the prettiest machine on the market ; No optical digital audio output ; A mere 500GB HDD ; No 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player

Sony PlayStation 4 Slim review

Smaller, lighter, quieter, cheaper

Always significantly quieter than the original and often silent ; Usefully smaller and arguably better looking ; Tiny, handy tweaks to the controller

No optical output or 4K Blu-ray drive

Better than the original PS4 in almost every way, the Slim is an awesome console if you're not a Pro-style gamer

Sony PS4 (Slim) review

PlayStation 4 sheds some weight – and some notes off its price tag

Great games ; Good value ; Improved power efficiency ; PS Plus still a great deal ; DualShock 4 better than ever

Optical audio removed ; No 4K Blu-ray player

An excellent console with a great catalogue of AAA games, the slimmer, smaller PS4 is better in almost every way compared to the original, barring one notable exception.

PS4 Slim review: Compact, beautiful and exactly what you’d expect

Everything and nothing has changed in this welcome redesign of Sony's brilliant PS4

Aside from those issues, however, the PS4 Slim is everything you’d expect it to be. It would have been nice to see Sony adopt Microsoft’s stance and add some new features, but in truth, it really didn’t need to.

PlayStation 4 Slim review: Wait for the PS4 Pro if you can

In a vacuum, the PlayStation 4 Slim is a great console. It's smaller, quieter and much more portable than the original PS4. But unless you need a new console right now and are on a strict budget, there's no reason to buy it when the higher-powered PS4...

More compact than before ; Quieter performance ; Even more portable than before ; No more distracting LED strip

Lacks the UHD Blu-ray drive of the similarly priced Xbox One S ; Pack-in DualShock 4 controller still has abysmal battery life ; Only available with a 500GB disk

Sony PlayStation 4 Slim review

Faster Wi-Fi can make a big difference ; Smaller chassis with fun design ; Same great PS4 game library ; More affordable than ever

No more optical port ; More powerful PS4 console also available

Editor's Choice

Sony PlayStation 4 Slim

The slimmer, redesigned PlayStation 4 Slim has all of the features of the original, with a lower price and twice the storage capacity.

Smaller, sleeker design. Supports the full PS4 game library, including PS VR. 1 TB hard drive.

No PS4 Pro-like hardware improvements. No optical audio output. Online multiplayer requires a PS Plus subscription.

If you don't have a PS4 yet and aren't swayed by the (uneven) graphical benefits of the PS4 Pro, the PS4 Slim offers the same excellent gaming experience in 1080p, and all of the storage, for $100 less. It remains an Editors' Choice as one of the best...

Sony PlayStation 4 Slim review

There are really only three things you need to know about the PlayStation 4 Slim.

The newer PS4 has a smaller footprint, slick design, quieter operation and keeps intact all of the PS4 awesomeness it's offered since 2013. The slightly updated DualShock4 controller is a bonus.

The slim PS4 loses its optical audio port, which will be a bummer for third-party headphone users. The somewhat pricier PS4 Pro delivers a larger hard drive and the promise of better graphics.

The PS4 Slim is a deja vu game console: great for gamers on a budget, not quite as good as the PS4 Pro and skippable for any existing PlayStation 4 owner.
