Sony PS4 (Slim) review

PlayStation 4 sheds some weight – and some notes off its price tag

Great games ; Good value ; Improved power efficiency ; PS Plus still a great deal ; DualShock 4 better than ever

Optical audio removed ; No 4K Blu-ray player

An excellent console with a great catalogue of AAA games, the slimmer, smaller PS4 is better in almost every way compared to the original, barring one notable exception.

PS4 Slim review: The slim-fit 'Station - Pocket-lint

So while the latest iteration of the PS4 is a great console – and very well timed considering PlayStation VR is just around the corner too – we wonder

Smaller device than original PS4 that's easy to hide out of the way, new DualShock 4 controller with USB communication, easier to swap out hard drive than before, capable of HDR gaming

Not the prettiest machine on the market, no optical digital audio output, a mere 500GB HDD, no 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, Pro's added power makes it the more obvious choice

There's little doubt that when viewed on its own terms, with little comparison to rivals or the former model, the PS4 Slim is an excellent games console. It might not be as pretty as its older brother, but it is as capable. And considering the PS4...

PS4 Slim review: it’s the same gaming platform you're used to, and that’s no bad thing

Quieter, cooler and thinner, the new PlayStation 4 plays it safe with surprisingly satisfying results

Great gaming platform ; Good value for money ; Controller could be best ever

Optical audio port removed ; Still not sure on aesthetics

PS4 Slim review: Compact, beautiful and exactly what you’d expect

Everything and nothing has changed in this welcome redesign of Sony's brilliant PS4

Aside from those issues, however, the PS4 Slim is everything you’d expect it to be. It would have been nice to see Sony adopt Microsoft’s stance and add some new features, but in truth, it really didn’t need to.

PlayStation 4 Slim review: Wait for the PS4 Pro if you can

In a vacuum, the PlayStation 4 Slim is a great console. It's smaller, quieter and much more portable than the original PS4. But unless you need a new console right now and are on a strict budget, there's no reason to buy it when the higher-powered PS4...

More compact than before ; Quieter performance ; Even more portable than before ; No more distracting LED strip

Lacks the UHD Blu-ray drive of the similarly priced Xbox One S ; Pack-in DualShock 4 controller still has abysmal battery life ; Only available with a 500GB disk

More money for Immortals.

See how much slimmer and lighter Sony's new PlayStation 4 is than the original (hands-on)

Sony is slimming down the PlayStation 4, following the company's usual modus operandi of releasing an updated and redesigned version of a console part-way through its lifecycle.
