Nintendo 3DS XL (2014) review

Nintendo's already excellent handheld receives some long-awaited upgrades

Second directional stick added ; Face tracking increases 3D viewing angles ; Faster processor

C-stick feels overly firm and inaccurate ; No charger included in the box ; No games utilise the extra power

Nintendo delivered two surprises back in August: one, that it planned to release a new iteration of the market leading Nintendo 3DS handheld by the end of the year, and two, that it would release in Australia before Europe and North America.

Nintendo 3DS XL review

Does bigger mean better with Nintendo's new jumbo 3D handheld?

Better battery ; Bigger screens ; Comfortable 3D ; Improved layout

Lower pixel density ; Only one circle pad ; Less pretty

The Nintendo 3DS XL is now on sale in Europe and boy does Nintendo need it to sell well.

Nintendo 3DS XL review

Can the super-sized Nintendo 3DS XL improve on its portable gaming predecessor?

Bigger screen looks great ; 3D sweet spot much larger ; Comfortable curved design

Build feels a bit cheap ; Heft makes it cumbersome ; Bland styling

New Nintendo 3DS XL review

The gimmicky handheld gets a second shot at greatness, but this is more evolution than revolution

The 3D is a bit better ; Speedier processor for a slightly slicker experience ; Enhanced build and layout ; Great games!

Still dated in terms of tech ; New 3D isn't perfect ; Charger isn't included. Seriously

This is not the 3DS completely redefined, but the perks and tweaks make for a better overall experience

Nintendo 3DS XL review

A non-essential, yet evolutionary upgrade that offers the best on-the-go 3D gaming experience in classic Nintendo style

Nintendo 3DS XL

Does the 3DS get better when you go extra-large?

A more immersive big-screen experience ; Makes 3D more effective and more practical ; More comfortable than the original 3DS ; Great games, and easy and fun to use

Big screen spoilt by low resolution ; Battery life still not great

Nintendo could arguably have upgraded processors and used the overhead to either render 3DS graphics to a higher resolution or upscale, but here there would have been cost implications. All the same, that screen can be merciless in exposing the...

Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo's 3DS XL charmed us no end when we first saw it, but having spent more time with it of late, we found the console to be even better than we remembered.

Larger screen makes for greater immersiveness, Excellent build quality, Increased battery life, Reasonable price

Power cable not included, Still no integrated second analog stick

Nintendo 3DS XL review

Review Nintendo has supersized its 3DS with a 4.9in screen that's almost twice the size area of its predecessor. The handheld goes on sale this week, but if you're unsure whether its worth the upgrade, here's what we thought after a weekend of gaming...

If you're hellbent on getting your nipper or yourself a 3DS, then the XL is the obvious choice. However, without the additional thumbstick, Nintendo has once again failed to deliver the means to comfortably explore 3D environments. Considering the...

REVIEW: Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo's 3DS handheld games console gets redesigned in the new 3DS XL model. Significantly bigger than the first edition, it'll please short-sighted, big-handed gamers for certain, but does it do enough to please everyone else? And is it worth an...

Despite a handful of missed opportunities, the 3DS XL is still the superior version of Nintendo's 3D-enabled handheld. It fits more comfortably in the hand, its 3D effect is more pronounced thanks the larger screens employed, battery life is improved...
