Xbox One S review

Xbox One S sets a new high point in console development

Vastly reduced physical footprint ; 4K & HDR streaming ; HDR gaming ; Xbox platform is steadily improving.

Needs adapter for Kinect ; Could fragment Xbox One audience ; 4K gaming limited to upscaling.

Xbox One S is the pinnacle of what Microsoft set out to create three years ago. But being sleeker, cheaper and more powerful than its predecessor, the One S could also rub early adopters (who shelled out for Kinect) the wrong way.

Xbox One S review: Great console and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, what else?

It's somewhat strange that, in just three years, what were described as the "next generation" are now considered standard and commonplace, while a new generation of games consoles is already starting to emerge.

A slimmer, smarter version of the Xbox One, capable of playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays with HDR, has 4K Netflix support, HDR gaming, upscales all output to 2160p, great new wireless controller, no power brick

Gaming is not improved by much so few reasons to upgrade bar 4K video, needs extra 4K app support from the likes of Amazon, no native Kinect port

There's no doubt in our minds that the Xbox One S is a much more capable machine than its predecessor. It is physically more attractive, comes jam packed with new features and offers a smoother, more responsive experience. However, whether that will...

Xbox One S review: smaller, better, whiter

The same slick gaming platform you're used to, however now with upgraded 4K Ultra HD hotness

4K Ultra HD playback ; Slicker and slimmer console

Only 1.6TB of 2TB HDD usable

Xbox One S review

Frustrating ‘4K console' promises much on paper, but doesn't quite deliver...

Price ; Controller works well ; Rich colours ; Decent detail with 4K content

4K HDR images lack subtlety ; Lean sound ; Can’t pass-through 4K video, incompatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X ; Unintuitive menus

As tempting as the price may be, this ‘4K console' just doesn’t deliver

Xbox One S

Microsoft has made a new Xbox, only it's not entirely new. The Xbox One S is a 0.5 upgrade to the existing Xbox One, rather than its successor. But don't be fooled into thinking it's the same console, because this one has a few new tricks up its sleeves.

Microsoft Xbox One S review

The 4K console war has begun. Now bring on the PlayStation 4 Neo

You favourite games in pin-sharp detail ; The cheapest 4K Blu-ray player you can buy ; Sleek new design, sans power brick

PS4 still has the better exclusives ; Controller not rechargeable as standard

The best console you can buy, but for how long?

Xbox One S review: Microsoft finally gets it right

The Xbox One S is everything the original console should have been — and a bit more

Xbox One S Review

I've been using the Xbox One S for a while now, and it's become clear that Microsoft has a winner on its hands. Not just because the device is better than its predecessor - and less expensive. The Xbox One S is better than the Xbox One, the PS4, and...

Several versions of the Xbox One S are available, including the Xbox One S with 500GB internal storage starting at $299 USD. Occasionally stores will be offering up special package deals with games for $249.99. One example that’s popped up already is...

Microsoft Xbox One S

The new, streamlined Microsoft Xbox One S is smaller than the original Xbox One console, comes with a redesigned controller, and can play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

Ultra HD Blu-ray playback. Smaller footprint. Increased storage options. Redesigned gamepad features a headset jack.

4K video streaming not yet available. Games aren't upconverted to 4K. No Kinect.

Xbox One S review: a worthy successor -- to the Xbox 360

Thanks to new software, more compact hardware and an excellent pack-in controller, the Xbox One S feels like a worthy successor to the older Xbox 360. If you already have an Xbox One, however, there's little reason to upgrade unless you're also...

The only game console with a UHD Blu-ray drive for 4K movie playback ; Refined design ; Very quiet and very small ; Excellent pack-in gamepad

4K streaming apps and 4K Blu-ray playback don't work out of the box ; HDR video for gaming won't be available until this fall ; No reason to buy unless you own a 4K TV

After a limited run, Lazarus is making virtual return as part of the V&A Museum's Performance Festival.
