Fall in love with your movie collection all over again with the XD-E500. The XD-E500 not only upconverts standard DVD to 1080p resolution, but also enhances your viewing experience thanks to three user selectable modes: sharp for added edge detail, color for richer blues and greens, and contrast for enhancement of details in darker scenes.

With the battle for Blu-ray and HD DVD over, Toshiba has changed its tack and launched a new upscaling DVD player, but does it have want to takes to recapture ground lost? We get watching to find out. The Toshiba XD-E500 is a black box with minimal...
Upscaling capabilities
Can't show the technology in action
Toshiba has created an upscaling tech that has the ability to let you forget about Blu-ray for quite some time
The result is a noticeable improvement making your DVD collection sharper whatever you opt to play. In our tests the XD-E500 was noticeably better than our PS3, which we rate for its upscaling capabilities. It also improves and easily beats Toshiba's...

It's an unpredictable old world. Just when I was warming to HD DVD, Blu-ray goes and wins the hi-def format war – thanks primarily to the PS3 and Warner. But rather than swallow its pride and switch to Blu-ray, or count the millions of dollars it spent...

With the demise of HD DVD, Toshiba has turned its attention back to DVD.
I sincerely hope that Toshiba comes to its senses sometime soon and starts to produce Blu-ray players, because if the company keeps its head firmly in the sand, it’s going to seriously damage its standing in the home entertainment arena. Now that the...

This is a decent upscaling DVD player that can breathe extra life into your DVD collection. The problem is, it's rather a pain to use at times, and if you own a 32-inch 1080p Philips TV you're going to be bang out of luck with it
Picture quality ; Sound ; Holds its own against other upscaling players
It's expensive for a DVD player ; A pain to use with certain TVs
It's noteworthy that Toshiba has some TVs on the horizon that feature a more advanced upscaling system, and the early samples we've seen have been brilliant. So perhaps this is a good time to wait and see what arrives on the market in the next few months

Toshiba has been hyping the heck out of its new upconverting Toshiba XD-E500 DVD player, but has also been careful not to declare it an equivalent to Blu-ray, the high-definition format that beat out Toshiba's HD-DVD.
The Toshiba XD-E500 is a solid upconverting DVD player, even with the extra settings turned off, and the sharp feature definitely adds detail. But due to the player's £120 suggested price tag - roughly twice that of other upconverting players but...

It's not HD, but it's one of the best affordable DVD players we've seen
Sharp' mode offers incredibly detailed pictures ; naturally vibrant colours ; smooth, stable motion ; nice styling
Sound could do with just a little more refinement

HD DVD is dead, but can Toshiba still take a bite out of Blu-ray?
Genuinely sets new upscaling standards / Supports DiVX / Runs silently
Expensive for a DVD player / Rather cheaply built / Doesn’t play Blu-ray
It’s also worth experimenting with the E500’s alternative Colour and Contrast modes, which focus on making colours more lifelike and details in dark areas more obvious respectively. But we always came back to the Sharp setting in the end

If you want a DVD player from an established brand at low price, look no further than the SD-260E. Shop around online and you can find this basic player for as little as £30.
Great features, Solid performance, Good all-rounder, Price, Easy to use, Good picture quality
No multimedia performance, No HDMI, Uninspired design
If you're strapped for cash and want an uncomplicated movie machine that does the basics well, this is a great choice

Very good at upscaling DVDs
Only half the price of an entry-level Blu-ray player with built-in DVD upscaler, no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs
The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you're certain that you don't want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead.
