Fujifilm Finepix S200EXR review

By (expertreviews.co.uk)

Award: Best Buy!

The S200EXR is the first bridge camera we've seen in a long time. Bridge cameras have controls and ergonomics to rival SLR cameras, but are built around small sensors similar to those found in compact cameras. They were once seen as a low-cost...

Performance could be better, but with SLR-like controls and exceptional image quality, this is the best ultra-zoom camera we’ve seen.

The S200EXR’s 14.3x zoom lens keeps it in the running, though. Matching this zoom range on an SLR would require an expensive lens upgrade, bringing the total cost of an equivalent SLR package to around £700.

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR review

By Dave Johnson (pcadvisor.co.uk)

It may not be a DSLR, but the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR is the sort of advanced point-and-shoot camera that's an enthusiast's dream.

The muscular zoom, wealth of exposure controls, smart layout, and good battery life make the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR a strong contender for a spot in your camera bag.

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR

Is this the best super-zoom camera of the year?

Manual 14.3x (30.5-436mm) lens ; Powerful flash ; Manual controls ; Great low light performance ; Electronic viewfinder

Large and heavy body ; Only VGA video ; Fixed monitor

Fujifilm has once again produced a superb feature-packed super-zoom camera that sets new standards for image quality and versatility, providing more control than most entry-level DSLRs. As a hobby photographer's camera the S200EXR is in a class of its...

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR review

By Rod Lawton (cnet.co.uk)

The build quality, handling and controls of the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR really are surprising given its price. It's just like a digital SLR, but much cheaper, and so much more pleasant to handle than rival superzooms, thanks to its size and manual...

Long 14.3x zoom ; Good design ; Great value for money

EXR features aren't fully integrated with the rest of the camera ; Sensor size limits quality

Conclusion You get tonnes of camera with the Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR. It looks and handles like a dSLR, but costs half as much as an equivalent dSLR and superzoom lens combination. But, while the EXR sensor technology certainly works, it's not yet...

But the clever EXR technology feels like an add-on, and the small sensor size puts a cap on picture quality

Review: Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR

By Leonard Goh (asia.cnet.com)

This dSLR lookalike may not have scored well in the features department, but the picture quality impressed us.

Excellent picture quality; RAW image capture; effective noise reduction control

Lens not as wide as S100FS'; no HD video option; no tilting LCD; size of camera not suitable for everyone

Seasoned shutterbugs will definitely appreciate the S200EXR for its dSLR-like controls and great picture quality, though its bulk and design may put off beginners. It took us a while to get used to the confusing menu interface, which we hope Fujifilm...

But all in, we recommend the FinePix to users who want a dSLR-like experience without the hassle of having to change lenses.

Fujifilm Finepix S200EXR bridge camera

By James Cumpsty (reghardware.co.uk)

Versatile superzoom with classic Fuji film emulation modes.

While a brighter lens would be desirable it would push the price far too high, however, this camera has some neat tricks to compensate in different environments. Nevertheless, the sort of user the S200EXR really suits is the nature and landscape...

Indeed, the convenience of not having to carry multiple lenses shouldn't be overlooked. And for those with a sense of nostalgia, the Fuji film emulation modes add a certain something that is really good to see again.

Fuji FinePix S200EXR

By (fwd.five.tv)

The FinePix S200EXR is a bridge camera that's built to look like a Digital SLR (DSLR). It's packed with features from the 12MP Super CCD EXR sensor and 14.3x optical zoom lens down to its super-intelligent flash and anti-blur technology.

With a chunky handgrip, lots of separate buttons and controls, a focus ring and a zoom ring on the lens, the S200EXR looks and handles like a DSLR. These manual functions allow you to shape and control shots and make grabbing great-looking, tightly...

Most disappointing was the S200EXR’s feeble video results. Despite being able to shoot movie clips, the camera’s resolution is limited to just 640x480 (VGA) quality – a long way from the levels of high-definition. On playback our movies had poor...

The FinePix S200EXR has a practical design that’s closer to DSLR cameras than many of its rivals and it’s good fun to use for stills photography. Sadly, the underwhelming video performance renders this particular feature more of an intriguing novelty...

Fujifilm FinePix S200EXR

By Kevin Carter (macuser.co.uk)

Bridging the gap between a compact and DSLR, superzooms combine much of the versatility of the latter in a smaller package, although the design is something of a compromise. With a physically smaller sensor, picture quality at high ISOs can't match...

The real stars of the show here are the sensor and lens. If we've any misgivings it's that the electronic viewfinder is no match for the detailed 2.7in screen below, although that now is no longer the flip-out type of the original S100FS. It's also...

Noise and clipped shadows and highlights are common when shooting in anything but perfect conditions, but Fuji's S200EXR promises to change that

FujiFilm FinePix S200EXR review

By Dave Johnson (macworld.co.uk)

An impressive camera that disappoints by virtue of low-definition video.

With a layout that mimics a typical SLR’s design, Fujifilm's FinePix S200EXR offers superb handling, megazoom reach, advanced exposure control, and only a few minor disappointments.

Manufacturer's Description

The 14.3x zoom lens designed for the S200EXR comprises 13 elements in 10 groups including aspherical and low-dispersion glass elements. The aspherical elements ensure low distortion and superior light-gathering abilities, for outstanding performance despite the relatively small number of elements. To achieve true image quality, the S200EXR processor employs an advanced electric charge to control the output from the Super CCD EXR sensor. This simultaneously minimizes all forms of noise while allowing more natural colors, higher resolution, and quicker processing. This technology also makes possible rapid continuous shooting and the Multi Frame technology that allows the S200EXR to automatically align a number of separate exposures into one image. The Super CCD EXR provides superior picture quality, enabling a "3-in-1" sensor combination of Fine Capture technology (high resolution), Pixel Fusion technology (high sensitivity & low noise), and Dual Capture technology (wide dynamic range). With an innovative color filter array and image processing technology, the EXR ensures an advanced reproduction in imaging with exceptionally balanced quality. With high resolution and expressive imaging abilities, the Fujinon lenses and the next generation EXR processor outfitted in the S200EXR, will lead you to another level of imaging performance.
