While it looks very similar, the new model has a host of new features that make it a significant advance over the predecessor

The fully customisable settings allow you to tweak the cameras colour response and use presets for portraits, landscapes and monochrome capture for example. The camera’s handling will be familiar to any EOS user, even film SLRs, and, although the...

We try out Canon's latest semi-pro DSLR

The Canon EOS 40D is facing a lot more competition than any of its predecessors, but still manages to set the benchmark for mid-range semi-professional DSLR cameras. Improvements to build quality, performance and image quality are a significant step up...

However the live-view feature and the environmental sealing aren't good as some of its competitors, and the control interface can be a bit fiddly too. Nonetheless, the 40D is genuinely pleasant camera to use, and the fantastic image quality more than...

Canon EOS 40D 10.5Mp digital SLR

By Melissa J Perenson (pcadvisor.co.uk)

The Canon EOS 40D is a digital SLR camera that strikes a terrific balance between performance and price.

The strengths of the Canon EOS 40D overshadow any minor drawbacks. It is a powerful, scalable camera. This is a great step-up model whose versatility will grow along with a keen photographer. And if you're a more advanced shooter or a pro looking for...

Canon EOS 40D review

By tech.co.uk staff (techradar.com)

The EOS 40D replaces the 30D, which itself replaced Canon's mid-range 20D model. These were all pitched above the basic entry-level 300D/350D/400D series, with metal build, faster continuous shooting and more advanced controls

Huge LCD screen ; Imressive continuous shooting seed ; 10-megaixels

No great advances in image quality

Canon EOS 40D review

By Lori Grunin (cnet.co.uk)

Great photo quality and excellent continuous-shooting performance are just two of the Canon EOS 40D's many attractions

Generally superior shooting speed among dSLRs ; First-rate photo quality

Large spot size for spot meter ; Relatively sluggish low-light focus

We think the 40D ultimately does deliver better photo quality, but some people might find the differences more subtle than the price differential warrants. And, of course, the more expensive Nikon D300 remains a wild card until we've tested it. So for...

Review: Canon EOS 40D

By Andrew Chan,CNET Asia staff (asia.cnet.com)

The Canon EOS 40D is a new beast. But will its consumer-oriented features overshadow its dSLR allure?

A set of useful new features; retains the user-friendly design of its predecessors; good-value-for-money kit; class-leading build quality and continuous shooting speed

Same resolution and sensor size as the much cheaper EOS 400D; Live view allows only manual focus

The Canon EOS 40D is a leap forward in improvement over its predecessors and its new features make it a great enthusiast's dSLR or a credible professional backup system.

Manufacturer's Description

This kit includes a Canon EOS 40D camera and EF-S 17-85mm lens. Welcome to the next generation of digital SLR photography - the Canon EOS 40D. The EOS 40D combines Canon's tremendous know-how in both the digital and photographic worlds, creating a camera that not only does everything one would expect of a traditional digital SLR, but one that incorporates staggering leaps forward in technological innovation. With such features like Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a more powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and more, the EOS 40D elevates digital photography to new heights, enhancing the shooting experience, and delivering images one could only expect from a Canon. Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, this EF-S lens brings true wide-angle to telecoverage to EOS 20D and Digital Rebel shooters. It has Canon's Image Stabilization system, allowing safe hand-holding at speeds up to three stops slower than otherwise possible. And of course, it's optically optimized for digital SLRs. A ring-type USM means both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.
