With the Caplio R7 rating as one of our favourite point-and-shoots of last year, the Ricoh R8 has a lot to live up to -- and it does. While you don't have many manual controls, this retro-style compact is feature rich and certainly tweakable, appealing to...

No full manual control
The Ricoh R8 may lack traditional manual controls, but it's still endlessly customisable even with a dead simple button and menu layout. The large screen, wide angle lens and long zoom make it worthwhile twiddling the menus to overcome some image issues.

Skin tones in some portrait shots
This is a retro style camera with a wide angle lens. Picture quality is good and I like the camera. It is a bit bigger than pocket sized, but it does have its own distinctive style.
The Ricoh R8 is a rather pleasant camera to use. It's equipped with a good zoom and superb LCD. Unfortunately, image quality is not up to par with the rest and in this product range we prefer the Panasonic TZ5.
Easy to use, quick, good quality images, good backup camera, good size.
Not full manual, but close with storable presets.
The build quality and features
No RAW format, no manual mode and no in-camera battery charger
Excellent zoom and macro, which were main reasons I purchased.
The navigation button more difficult to use than on a previous Caplio model I had.
