Though an attractive brushed metal faceplate and solid build distracts from its otherwise boxy dimensions, Panasonic's latest Lumix FX550 point and shoot is certainly one of the more conventionally styled yet premium priced compacts (at £294 SRP) we've...
Solid feel, metal construction, pocket size, large LCD screen, touch screen operation and button control provides a "best of both worlds
Video not full HD, no HDMI out port and required cable costs extra
If you’ve fancied trying out a touchscreen compact but been put off by the lack of buttons to fall back on, Panasonic’s FX550 offers a successful marriage of old and new in a fittingly traditional styling
For the occasional traveller looking for a sturdily built pocket snapper that will withstand the odd knock and scratch the Lumix DMC-FX550 therefore comes recommended.

It's upgrade time for Panasonic's touch-screen compact
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 is and upgrade of the FX500, but only just. The extra two megapixels don't make much difference. However build quality, design and performance are all well up to scratch, and image quality is comfortably better than...

We have to ask what the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550's hybrid touchscreen interface actually achieves. It doesn't replace the usual set of buttons because you get these too. The 25-125mm zoom doesn't perform brilliantly, either. While the DMC-FX550 sounds...
Offers a surprising amount of manual control ; Super-wideangle zoom ; Good focus tracking
Poor lens quality at full zoom ; Occasionally hit-and-miss touchscreen interface
Conclusion The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 is packed with good ideas and neat features, but the hybrid interface is patchy and the lens quality isn't good enough to justify the camera's manual modes. It's alright, and it's still pretty good value, but...

Retro styling meets 12MP stills, 3in touchscreen LCD and 720p HD movies. Has Panny's FX550 got the lot?
Simply stunning shots. Tactile design. Intuitive touchscreen
No viewfinder. Less than smooth movies. Mono sound

Touch panel 12 megapixel, 5x zoom compact shooting HD movies
With pricing comparable to immediate rivals, if you're looking for a pocket snapper that presents a small(ish) form factor, good sturdy build, choice of button or touch screen control and consistent JPEG performance, look no further than the FX550.

This is a feature packed smaller compact. It offers a manual exposure mode, High Definition movies, touch control for key features through the 3 inch LCD screen and a wide angle lens. Picture quality is very good and it is a well thought out camera.
Best touch screen setup - manual exposure - HD movies - extreme wide angle lens - picture quality
There are no areas that really stand out
Taking the whole package into account including the features and picture quality, the Panasonic Lumix DMC FX550 is a class act. I would be very happy to own one.

AF can lag at times, touch screen can become fiddly, images a bit noisy
Quite simply the Panasonic FX550 (or FX580 for those across the pond) is an excellent little compact. Its simple design makes for easy functioning, further championed by the 3in touch screen, AF tracking and 25mm wide angle lens. On occasion the...

You get quite a variety of options with the FX580, and with an MSRP of $399 the model should be intriguing to a diverse group of consumers.
