Olympus mju Tough-8000

By gavramidis (cnet.co.uk) Read the full review

I got it as a warranty replacement to a 1030 SW which finally leaked water after repairing twice for dust participles in the sensor (!). Actually that 1030 was purchased in Singapore as noted by the previous reviewer and makes me wonder if that whole...

Compact and indeed tough. Ideal for kids handling and introducing them in the world of photography. Great for underwater pictures

Nothing! It's a perfect all-arounder and image quality is very good, if not excellent

Olympus mju Tough-8000 review

By Rod Lawton (cnet.co.uk)

If you want a camera that can take anything you can throw at it, they don't come any tougher than the Olympus mju Tough-8000. The beauty of it is that it works perfectly well as an everyday pocket compact too. The 8000 looks good and works well -- it's...

Extremely tough ; Everyday practicality ; Easy to use ; Super macro mode

Not the sharpest lens ; Could prove slippery and fiddly in adverse conditions

Conclusion You expect compromises in a specialised camera, but precious few have been made with the Olympus mju Tough-8000. The fine detail could be better but it's not enough to worry about, and you're not giving up on any of the things you can take...

The 8000 is compact, practical, easy to use and versatile. It's like having an armoured Ford Ka

Review: Olympus Mju Tough-8000

By Alexandra Savvides (asia.cnet.com)

This hardy shooter survived all the extreme tests we put it through, but was found lacking in the image quality department.

Toughest camera in its class; Beauty mode quirky if a bit useless; bright LCD screen

Incredibly bright flash; average image quality; only incremental updates to the 1030SW; no high-definition video

While the Tough-8000 may be the most rugged camera on the market, this doesn't mean it's the best in terms of image quality. We were disappointed with the general lack of clarity that the photos exhibited, and the amount of noise and chromatic...

We were expecting better shooting mode capabilities such as more manual overrides and perhaps even the inclusion of HD video. We eagerly await the arrival of the yet-to-be-reviewed Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 and the Canon PowerShot D10 to see how they...

Olympus Mju Stylus Tough 8000

By Joshua Waller (digicamreview.co.uk)

The Olympus Mju Stylus Tough 8000 is an ultra compact, ultra tough, waterproof digital camera with a 12 megapixel sensor, a 3.6x optical zoom lens, image stabilisation, and a 2.7 inch screen.

Olympus MJU Tough 8000

By (cameras.co.uk)

This is a robust digital camera at home around water or on the ski slopes. It is also drop proof and crush proof. It takes a good picture and is worth a good look if you are after a digital camera anyone in the family can use.

Robust features - ease of use

Watch out for a loss of detail in light areas of your shots

The Olympus MJU Tough 8000 does the job it sets out to do. It is certainly a tough camera. You can use it more or less anywhere. It takes a good snapshot for most photo opportunities.

Olympus Mju Tough 8000

By Franck Mée (digitalversus.com)

One unusual aspect of the Mju Tough 8000 is that it comes without a battery charger. Instead, a mains adaptor is supplied that allows you to charge the camera with its USB port. What's even more unusual is that this adaptor can only recharge the...

Waterproof up to 10 metres, shock-resistant ; Solidly built and stylish ; 28 mm wide angle lens ; Faster than earlier models

External battery charger sold separately ; No automatic image rotation ; Photo quality could be improved ; Disappointing Intelligent Auto mode ; Only compatible with xD memory cards (MicroSD with adapter)

The Myu Tough 8000 is an extension of Olympus' collection of all-terrain cameras and it's definitely a step in the right direction, with a wide-angle lens, better grip and more responsiveness. It still lags behind land-based digital cameras, but good...

Unfortunately, that won't work with the Mju Tough 8000, which stays put while you charge it up. If you're one of those people who likes to keep using your camera all day long and you've got your heart set on this camera, you'll need to buy yet another...

Olympus Mju Tough-8000/6000

By Chris Marker (wired.co.uk)

A couple of months ago, I watched an Olympus representative throw one of the company's new Tough cameras onto a Formica tabletop. The assembled journalists, myself included, winced as it banged off the furniture, but we weren't wincing out of concern...

What other camera can you freeze, crush and soak and still get a picture? Tap controls work well, and may save the day in extreme cold or underwater. Beauty mode should endear you to blotchy loved ones

If you don't get on with the tap controls, the Tough's fiddly buttons can be a pain, images are very noisy at medium and high ISO settings, and it has a limited zoom range for the price

Olympus has a lot of experience of making rugged cameras, and the new Tough series is, as the name suggests, the toughest yet. As well as 12 million pixels and a useful 3.6x optical zoom, the flagship Tough-8000 is waterproof up to a depth of 10 meters...
