Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

A stylish, compact camera with 18x superzoom lens, HD video recording and 12.1MP sensor

Imressive zoom range in a comact body ; High quality LCD screen ; Performance at high sensitivities

Unreliable autofocus at the long end of the zoom ; Fiddly dial on rear of the camera body ; Barrel distortion at wide end of the zoom

Despite these shortcomings, with care the Nikon Coolpix S9100 can produce excellent quality images in a wide range of conditions, making it an ideal point and shoot camera for those who travel frequently and will make good use of the extended zoom range.

Limited manual controls, but best in class zoom and HD movies

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

As the variety and quantity of “travel zoom” compacts grows, kicked off in earnest by Panasonic's TZ series a couple of years back and now sporting everything from Full HD video and GPS to 3D shooting, it was about time Nikon pimped its Coolpix series...

Huge optical zoom range from a camera that will still fit in the pocket, Full HD video with stereo sound and HDMI output, good build quality, easy to use, built-in effects filters are fun

Visible pixel fringing between areas of high contrast and corner softening at maximum wide angle - but neither are uncommon, no mains charger

One of the newest and best travel zooms on the market today, the S9100 marries a near best-in-class focal range and sophisticated exterior with user friendly operation and fun features such as digital effects and Easy panorama mode for those who do...

Nikon Coolpix S9100 Review

Experienced snappers might crave more flexibility, but as a classy compact super-zoom it's hard to beat

The Nikon S9100 is skinnier than a wafer that’s been run over by a steamroller (well, nearly) but it packs a mighty zoom range. Switch it on and an 18x optical lens protrudes Pinocchio schnoz-style ou

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

The Coolpix S8000 marked Nikon's surprisingly late entry to the compact ultra-zoom market, but it struggled to compete with the more established ranges from Panasonic, Canon and Samsung.

A compact ultra-zoom camera that copes well in low light is a rare treat; excellent videos and a superb screen round it out nicely

Nikon Coolpix S9100 review

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a solidly built, automatic camera with a huge 18x zoom lens, and it can produce very good images. Updated, 8 Jun 2011

Styled like a high-end enthusiasts’ compact, complete with natty pop-up flash and stereo microphones, the S9100 is nevertheless an accessible point and shoot. While we'd direct experienced photographers not requiring a large zoom to the Coolpix P300,...

This is one of the sleekest compact super zooms on the market.

18x optical zoom ; Easy automatic controls ; High resolution monitor

Very litte manual control

Alongside dedicated scene and subject mode buttons we get an array of digital effects. Drill down into the scene options by twisting the dial to that setting and further pressing the dedicated menu button and you'll find a new 'Easy Panorama' feature,...

Nikon Coolpix S9100 hands-on test

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 compact superzoom will cost you a pretty penny, but it packs tonnes of features into a compact package, including a whopping 18x zoom. If its image quality is up to scratch, it could be a winner.

Long 18x optical zoom ; 1080p video-recording capability

Expensive

The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is expensive, but it packs in some very tasty features. If its image quality is good, the S9100 could be the king of this year's compact superzooms

Review: Nikon Coolpix S9100

Nikon's latest 12-megapixel long-zoom snapper features a BSI CMOS sensor and 18x optical zoom lens. We see how it performs.

Fast shooting performance; wide and long lens in a pocketable body; useful and fun shooting modes

Photo and video quality soft at high ISOs and in low-light conditions; lacks auto picture rotation

While several manufacturers have bulked up their compact megazoom offerings with GPS receivers, touchscreens, 3D photo capture, and semimanual and manual shooting modes, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 is all about the lens. Yes, it has plenty of other things...
