Canon PowerShot SX600 HS review

A reliable 18x zoom travel compact with a range of useful functions

18x optical zoom ; Wi-Fi / NFC ; Creative Filters

No touchscreen ; Lack of control in Creative mode ; Macro focusing sometimes disappointing

If you're looking for a reliable camera with a decent zoom range and that is capable of producing good quality images – without too much input from you – the SX600HS is a good option.

Canon PowerShot SX600 HS review

The 16-megapixel PowerShot SX600 HS is sort of an oddball in Canon's SX and S models.

The Canon PowerShot SX600 HS delivers easy automatic shooting options, very good photo and video quality, and a useful zoom range with optical image stabilization in a slim, lightweight package and at a reasonable price.

The lens is slow, so indoor use of the zoom lens is limited, the autofocus can be frustratingly inaccurate at times, and low-light photo and video quality are merely OK.

Though there's nothing extraordinary about it, the SX600 HS is a solid choice for snapshooters wanting a simple step up from a smartphone without sacrificing on-the-go sharing.

Canon PowerShot SX600 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX600 HS is a slim camera with an 18x zoom lens and Wi-Fi, but its images are on the noisy side.

Sharp lens. Quick focus. 18x zoom range. Creative Shot function. Wi-Fi.

Noisy images. No high-speed burst shooting. Limited control when using Creative Shot.

You can also post images and video to Web sites, but you'll have to configure a few things first. The SX600 uses the Canon Image Gateway service to push images to Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, and others, and the first step is setting up an account there....

Initial WiFi setup was not the easiest we have used.

Exposure and Color were accurate in all shooting modes ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Intelligent I.S. helps steady the camera while shooting on the go or in low-light ; Good overall image quality ; 460k dot LCD is great...
