Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (PC) review

Gas-powered expansion pack...

Epic in scale and challenging, but just one single-player campaign? Shame.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (PC)

By (cnet.com)

It's hard to come up with a real-time strategy game that's as large and ambitious as Supreme Commander, which came out at the beginning of this year. The spiritual successor to 1997's famed Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander is a sci-fi strategy...

With battlefields that are as large as 40-by-40 square kilometers (or even 81-by-81 in skirmish and multiplayer), the game offers a lot of flexibility and room. When you flash forward to the end of the year, we get Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.

Supreme Commander (PC)

When it comes to real-time strategy games, few developers have followed the philosophy that bigger is better. As such, the scale of RTS games has stayed mostly the same over the past decade. The battlefields never feel that large, and the focus is more...

Well, Supreme Commander isn't that kind of game. Instead, the long-awaited strategy game from Gas Powered Games is everything that was promised. This is a game that's less concerned with the aesthetics of combat than it is with capturing a sense of...

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

By Jason Ocampo (cnet.com.au)

Supreme Commander gets even bigger and better-looking thanks to this feature-packed expansion.

Campaign features epic, gargantuan battles ; Sharper, more detailed graphics ; Slew of new multiplayer and skirmish maps

Improved graphics require more horsepower to run smoothly ; Nuclear weapons have been weakened

Aside from the nuke quibble, there's a lot to like in Forged Alliance because it makes an already gargantuan game bigger and better. Supreme Commander fans will finally get to experience campaign missions that let them unleash the full weight of their...

When we look back at 2007 in terms of strategy gaming, it may very well be remembered as the year of Supreme Commander.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

By Patrick Mulhern (gamingtarget.com)

As expected, FA's addition of the Seraphim caused my old strategies to become useless at worst, or in need of modification at best. The re-tooling of strategies causes a new infusion of replay-ability; exactly what an expansion should do. The one...

Gamers who pick up Forged Alliance - and only have Forged Alliance - should know that they will be forced to use the Seraphim in multiplayer skirmishes

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance on PC games

By gillman (mygamer.com)

Technology Is Fun

Supreme Commander manages to do a lot of things right, but it also manages to do many things wrong as well. From the moment the game starts to the point that it ends the feeling of being lost is very hard to shake, even when it comes down to issuing...

There is a certain depth to the game that is hard to ignore, certain units being the most useful against other types of units. The problem is that while the game does not require the first game to play, it is almost needed to figure out what is going...

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (PC)

By Troy S. Goodfellow (crispygamer.com)

In the opening movie of Supreme Commander, we are briefly introduced to the Seraphim, an alien race that adopts a group of humans as worshippers and then is wiped out in a genocidal campaign by the United Earth Force. (This war crime spawns the Aeon as...

This review is based on a retail copy provided by the publisher.

The original campaign ends with allusions to the return of this alien behemoth, ready for revenge on the universe. I guess the lesson is that genocide is a bad thing, more so if you don't do the job right the first time.
