Sony DCR-HC1000 test and review

Can Sony's new sub-£1,000 three-chipper live up to the hugely popular DCR-TRV950 it replaces?

Sony DCR-HC1000E

The new DCR-HC1000E camcorder replaced Sony's previous mid-range MiniDV model, the DCRTRV950E. It has the majority of its predecessor's features, but ...

Small, easy to use, good automatic performance

High levels of image noise in badly lit areas, weak internal microphone

Ideal for wealthy consumers who favour simple operation and high-quality automatic performance.

Sony Handycam DCR-HC1000

The DCR-HC1000 is made to appeal to video enthusiasts who want high-quality images and a degree of manual control but don't need a lot of pro-oriented features.

Outlook: Panasonic's recently announced PV-GS400 will be the main competition for this camcorder. At AU$3,299, the Sony DCR-HC1000 is the more expensive option. We're looking forward to finding out whether it's worth the slightly higher price.

Expert Review

The Sony DCR-HC1000 was something of a disappointment this year. It entered the market at a substantially higher price than the PV-GS400, its biggest competitor, and frankly, didn't measure up. While the camcorder's video and low light performance were...

Spot metering, Spot Focusing, - Video and Low light performance, - Image Stabilization, - Color hue and sharpness control

Handling, - Touch screen, - Manual control options (no iris reading)

Sony DCR-HC1000 First Impressions Review - Sony MiniDV Camcorders

At a potential price of $1700.00, the DCR-HC1000 is a new contender in the 3 CCD consumer market. While it offers many new features, it is hard to imagine the HC1000 gaining a hold of the market at such a price. However, on its own terms, the HC1000...

Sony Handycam DCR-HC1000

sony handycam dcr-hc1000 review: The DCR-HC1000 is made to appeal to video enthusiasts who want high-quality images and a degree of manual control but don't need a lot of pro-oriented features.

Great on automatic for corporate video - downconverting HDV to DV and then to web format via a compression utilty. I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress to Flash video. Online videos retains great clarity and detail with small file sizes for progessive...

Bulky and fairly heavy. ND1 or ND2 filters will kick in when in full auto - can create a continuity problem. Camera doesnt come with ILink (for transferring video to PC) and the included battery runs about 2 hrs.

For the price, the best HD camera currently available.
