Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8 review

This eight-megapixel hybrid camera-camcorder has a 2.5-inch LCD and 5x zoom lens. You can also record 640×480-pixel H.264 files at 60fps, with stereo sound, and it's waterproof to 1.5m. Impressed by this pistol- camcorder yet?

Funny things happen when you go on holiday. Burgers become an acceptable meal EVERY DAY, drinking your body weight in booze at lunch-time seems like a good idea and it’s all too easy to attempt sporting activities that end in a complicated...

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8′s ray-gun styling could cause some problems going through customs. And if that gets you nervous, you’ll need to buy a tripod, as the Xacti’s electronic stabilisation isn’t much cop at steadying shaking hands

It’s not as Tonka toy-sturdy as Olympus’s Tough range of cameras, but the Sanyo is smoother and simpler to use, pumping out solid standard def movies and decent stills, whatever the weather. Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8 is tagged with Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8, Sanyo...

Read our review and watch the video of this amazing underwater video camera.

There's no reason to buy this camera if you're not a fan of water ? there are plenty of other cameras in Sanyo's range that will suit you just as well. But if messing about on the river is your thing, then this camera will let you capture every splash...

Matthew Sparkes goes filming with the fishes using Sanyo's latest waterproof video camera.

Can a digital movie camera that takes pictures compete with compact cameras that shoot video? We road-test Sanyo's latest moviemaker-cum-stills camera to find out

An adequate moviemaker/compact camera producing average results. The main draw here is the natty design and waterproofing capabilities

Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8 (EXBK)

Arrrrr!

Good still image mode, slightly cheaper than the competition, one-handed design assists with swimming

Sluggish autofocus, it's only waterproof for 1.5 metres (and one hour), controls are too small

The VPC-CA8(EXBK) is a minor upgrade of Sanyo's previous waterproof model, the VPC-CA65 (EXW). Despite some improvements to image quality (particularly when it comes to still pictures), its limited underwater functionality remains unchanged.

Product Specifications

Regular cameras have to be kept dry at all times to prevent an unhappy visit to the camera hospital. Lucky for you, the Xacti CA8 is no regular camera. This dual-function still-and-video shooter is right at home on ski slopes, at the beach, or even right under the water. With no need for a bulky separate shell, the compact CA8 is fully waterproof for up to an hour at water depths of up to 1.5 meters. Adopting the high-compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, the Xacti CA8 records 60 VGA frames per second at the DVD-like resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, because MPEG-4 files are small, they're easy to handle and you can fit more of them on your memory card. The CA8's high-sensitivity images look superb on big-screen TVs, with videos kept shake-free thanks to the digital image stabilizer. The CA8 can detect faces and adjust the focus accordingly. Faces are sensed even when moving, allowing you to track up to 12 people in the frame. Automatic exposure is applied according to the area, while automatic focus captures the person at the center of the frame. What's more, you can zoom in on faces during playback.
