Sanyo Xacti VPC-C5

When we reviewed Sanyo's Xacti VPC-C1, we were quite enamoured with the hybrid digital camera and mini-camcorder approach. We were less impressed by the lack of features. The VPC-C5 suffers from some of the same problems - but a great overhaul of...

The Xacti VPC-C5 is miles better than Sanyo's previous efforts and we won't be surprised when other manufacturers emulate the camera/camcorder hybrid formula. But remember, if you want a straightforward digicam for your £500, you'll find better elsewhere.

What you gain in convenience with the palm-sized Sanyo VPC-C5 you lose in video quality.

Small size Easy to operate • High-quality still pictures

Mediocre video quality Inconvenient TV and PC connections

As a tiny, convenient, and easy-to-operate camcorder, the Eacti VPC-C5 seems to have it all.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-C5/DMX-C5

Compact, Light, Easy to store, 1GB disc can store a lot of video and stills. Good color better than Hi8

Require 2 batteries min as they soon discharge if not removed from camera ; Image stutters on pan shots. Night shots not as good as Hi8, Requires understanding of ISO settings and what they are. Have to wait for camera to save images before taking next...

VPC-C5 Recommendation

Basic operations couldn't be simpler on this baby. Swing up the two-inch LCD screen and the unit immediately enters Record/Pause mode; there's no tape or DVD cue/alignment time delay. There are only six buttons on the rear spine: Still Photo Record,...

Miniscule size ; marvellously merges still, video recording ; simple operation. Shoots stills at 5 Megapixels and records video in at VGA resolution - with good results

Relying on only SD Cards for storage. Underperforms in poorly lit conditions ; clumsy interface ; noisy lens motors
