Panasonic D-Snap SV-AV100 review: Panasonic D-Snap SV-AV100

Extremely compact; records MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video; 10X optical zoom; sharp 2.5-inch LCD.

Included 512MB SD card stores only 10 minutes of highest-quality footage; using the tilted cursor pad is awkward; electronic jitter in many video shots.

The SV-AV100 shoots better MPEG-2 movies than most cameras this small, but overall video quality and storage limitations disappoint.

Panasonic SV-AV100 D-Snap

The Panasonic SV-AV100 D-Snap SD Video Camcorder ($995 direct) delivers high-quality video and a competitive feature set in a package smaller than a deck of cards. The only downside is the cost of the required SD media, which—except for projects where...

Panasonic SV AV100

Panasonic SVAV100 D-Snap MPEG4 Digital Video Recorder w/10x Optical Zoom.

Pocket-sized MPEG-2/MPEG-4 SD video camera and 2-megapixel still camera--weighs just .34 pounds

A camcorder you can carry all the time.

Small size, lite weight. Portability.

Supplied software is horrible.

Tiny!! Fits comfortably in your pocket.

Software that is supplied could be improved.

Panasonic D-Snap SV-AV100

I've owned one of these for the past several years, and it's my primary camera for shooting live footage. Since the "art is in the editing", for capturing non-compressed, DVD-quality content, this unit can't be beat.

Still the only unit for shooting mpeg2 with such a small form factor. With 2 GB SD cards now available, storage is no longer an issue. Incredible size to feature ratio

Battery life ; Poor performer in low light conditions ; Still camera quality mediocre by today's standards

never fails me

Having a super small video camera that records in stereo is nice. Having one that also lets you edit in-camera is even better, but having one that doesn't fail when you need it most is priceless. I have taken this little wonder around the world and it...

SD card storage. no moving parts. quiet operation. very internal cleaning

Only 44 minutes per card. does not video well in low light

Product Specifications

The SV-AV100 can record MPEG2 video onto a compatible SD Memory Card, allowing you to enjoy a level of picture quality rivaling DVDs. In both Fine and Normal modes, images are recorded at the same rate used in TV broadcasts-to ensure clear, natural-looking pictures with smoothly flowing motion. You can also record MPEG4 video, which produces natural-looking action footage without a choppy "frame-by-frame" effect. MPEG4 is ideal for sharing over the Internet by e-mail, posting on Web pages or viewing on a compatible PC or television. You can take 340, 000 pixel digital still pictures with the SV-AV100. This is a handy feature for casual, "memo-style" snapshots. Miss the big game last night? Good thing you recorded it, but when are you going to have the time to watch it? With the A/V terminal on the included cradle, you can connect to an external device, like a TV or VCR, and then transfer the content directly onto the SD Memory Card inside your SV-AV100. Once the transfer is complete, you can watch the big game any time you want - right in the palm of your hand! The LCD monitor on the SV-AV100 rotates a full 270 degrees, giving you more shooting flexibility. It makes it a lot easier for you to get yourself in the scene.
