Panasonic NV-GS180 review

At £281, this model isn't much more expensive than the budget MiniDV models. Its grey plastic finish certainly looks more workmanlike than the stylish Canon and Sony models, though, and it has a fiddly manual lens cap.

Panasonic's NV-GS150 performed excellently in our Labs test in Shopper April 2006. Its successor, the NV-GS180, has a few differences but is £150 cheaper.

Panasonic NV-GS180

The NV-GS180 is the successor to the mid-range NV-GS150, and its specifications are remarkably similar. It's based around a trio of 1/6in 0.8Mp CCDs, offering true 2.3Mp still images at 1,760x1,320.

The Panasonic NV-GS180 doesn't seem like a huge step forward from its NV-GS150 predecessor; it's a touch shorter and lighter, and misses the flash and integrated lens cap, but otherwise offers very similar features. Nonetheless, assuming street prices...

It's not a huge step forward, but at this price, it's exceptional value for money for such good image quality.

Quick Review Camcorders: Panasonic PV-GS180

A strong performer in its price range with 3 CCDs, - Panasonic's excellent suite of manual controls allow great control over image quality, - In many respects the PV-GS300's equal - and likely a better value, - Mic and headphone jacks

Lacks, optical image stabilization and widescreen LCD, - Flash and remote only on the PV-GS300, - Modest still resolution

Panasonic PV-GS180 Camcorder Review

Panasonic's three-CCD camcorders have a storied past for video performance, which leaves a good deal of expectations for the PV-GS180, which replaces the PV-GS150. So how does this bottom-end three-chipper actually rate? Well, the performance was...

Panasonic has not made it easy this year. Their entire 3-CCD line was revamped and scaled down, making them more affordable, but at the loss of a lot of features. The PV-GS180 replaces the PV-GS150, which sold for $699, one hundred dollars more than...

Panasonic PV-GS180

The Panasonic PV-GS180 comes equipped with three 1/6" CCDs, each with 800K gross pixels and 440K effective pixels in 4:3 aspect ratio and 380K effective pixels in 16:9 aspect ratio. A three-chip configuration means that each of the primary colors of...

Product Specifications

Panasonic introduces the MiniDV Ecam with 3CCD technology for highest image quality, 10x optical zoom, 2.3 Megapixel still images, SD slot, 2.5" LCD, external charger; editing S/W, USB 2.0 (HS). Plus new on-screen Help Mode and Super Image Stabilizer. At the heart of this camcorder is the 3CCD camera system - the type used in professional video cameras. Playing a critical role in picture quality, this system provides exceptionally pure, faithful color. Panasonic's advanced 3CCD system gives users the highest image quality in three different ways: color depth, fine detail, and gradation (ensuring all tones in a color pallet are enjoyed). Panasonic's original Crystal Engine advanced image processing circuitry helps deliver maximum performance from the CCD camera system. The Crystal Engine - the brain of the camera - processes the signal from each of the 3 CCDs independently, giving both moving and still pictures outstanding quality. The Anti Ground Shaking (AGS) Function prevents you from shooting subjects that you did not intend to shoot by leaving the power on by mistake, or by filming the ground as you hold the camera by your side. This function ingeniously detects abnormal recording positions, and will automatically stop recording when such positions are detected, thus preventing wasteful use of battery power and media recording space.
