Panasonic HDC-SD9 review

If you've been keeping an eye on the camcorder market, you'll know tape and disks are conceding to models that record high quality video onto memory cards.

Small camera, big picture. Great features, superb quality, ideal for newcomers to HD.

Panasonic HDC-SD9 review

Acclaimed for its three-CCD sensor set-up, Panasonic's HDC-SD9 is half the size of competing camcorders – due in part to its favouring of SD storage.

While you must sacrifice a little quality to get a camcorder as diminutive as the Panasonic HDC-SD9, given the ease of use and responsiveness, many will may feel it's a sacrifice worth making.

Panasonic HDC-SD9 - Full HD Camcorder

James gets his hands on Panasonic's SD card-based HDC-SD9 again for a more extensive test.

Now we've had a chance to give Panasonic's HDC-SD9 a proper going over, we can't help being rather bowled over. It's definitely not a camcorder for the serious hobbyist, even if it can shoot great-quality video in all but the worst lighting conditions....

Panasonic HDC-SD9 - Preview

James previews the HDC-SD9 on show at Panasonic's HD Networking Convention in Valencia.

The HDC-SD9 has a similar basic specification to its predecessor. It sports Panasonic's trademark trio of CCDs, in this case 1/6in units with 560,000 pixels apiece. These will have a good effect on colour fidelity, but sensors this small usually have a...

Panasonic HDC-SD9

Whether you're in the market for a new camcorder for that trip of a lifetime or are a newcomer thinking of getting into video blogging, there's plenty of choice when it comes to how (and in which format) you record your home movies.

Small yet well constructed, fast in operation, storage capacity expandable via larger SDHC media

Storage via SD media only, picture and sound not as impressive as competing larger-build models

While it seems like a good mid-range option, performance in low light is not as good as the others, with overall picture quality not as sharp. Auto white balance performance is also variable, and its audio is not quite as 'full' sounding as we'd like....

Panasonic HDC-SD9 review

Panasonic's full High Definition camcorder, which records straight to SD card, is claimed to be the smallest and lightest in the world. So how does it measure up in its Best4Reviews test?

Small yet well constructed, fast in operation, storage capacity expandable via larger SDHC media, easy to use and can be carried in the pocket

Storage via SD media only, picture and audio not as impressive as competing larger build models

The Panasonic HDC-SD9 is small and perfectly formed, but appears more a triumph of design and engineering over performance - meaning that there are models out there (JVC's GZ-HD3) that will deliver better overall results for a similar price or a little...

Panasonic HDC-SD9

James Morris reviews Panasonic's new, improved pocket HD camcorder.

Product Specifications

Use of the super-small SDHC / SD memory card helped you to create the world's smallest and lightest 3CCD full-HD camcorder. The SD9 fits comfortably in the hand and can be used for long periods without causing fatigue. Panasonic full-HD camcorders record horizontal pixels at an HD resolution of up to 1920 pixels, which results in a total of around 2,070,000 pixels. And with progressive scanning, Panasonic's high-definition camcorders provide twice as much data per picture as conventional interlace scanning. This means you get breathtaking images with exceptional resolution and detail. Combine that with a 1080/24p format, which lets you capture scenes with a rich, film-like quality, and you can see why Panasonic full-HD camcorders take visual expression to the next level. With face detection - offered for the first time for recording moving pictures with a video camera - Panasonic makes it easy to capture beautiful faces and clear backgrounds even in dim or backlit scenes. This function, which can detect up to five faces at once, automatically adjusts the exposure and smooths skin tones according to the ambient brightness, so faces are bright and easy to see. The intelligent shooting guide function helps you get magnificent shots by displaying a text message in the LCD monitor, telling you which settings are best for the current shooting conditions. With intelligent selection playback, poor or inadvertent shots (such as shots of the ground or overly dark scenes) are skipped and all normal scenes are played while viewing. Panasonic's advanced Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) suppresses the effects of hand shake as you shoot. The system uses gyrosensors to detect hand shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate. This all happens a remarkable 4,000 times per second. And because the system is optical, no image quality is lost. Thanks to advanced O.I.S., the images you capture look incredibly clear, sharp and beautiful on a big TV screen. Developed specifically for full-HD digital camcorders, the world-class Leica Dicomar lens system is made using a multi-coating process that prevents light reflection and glare, which can make colors bleed and images appear washed out. It also prevents rings of light, or "ghosts".
