Panasonic HDC-SD5 review

Panasonic unveils its 3CCD, fully-specced AVCHD camcorder

Enjoyable to handle and easy to use ; Amazingly good images

No mic and headphone sockets ; Audio affected by light wind noise outdoors

Despite the fact that the SD5 lacks some of the features of its predecessor, there's no escaping the fact that it offers something very special for those looking for superb high-definition video in such a small and compact unit. Because of this, it's...

Panasonic HDC-SD5

Using SD cards as its sole recording media, the HDC-SD5 maybe light and compact, but is it desirable?

Panasonic HDC-SD5

This new 3CCD high definition camcorder uses memory cards, rather than tape or hard disk, to record and play back full 1920x 1080i HD movies and stills - with impressive results. Because it can take advantage of affordable SDHC Class 6 cards with...

Solid state is the future, you know. Amazing full HD at an affordable price.

Panasonic's SD5 claims the smallest Full-HD 3CCD camcorder crown ' but has too much been lost shrinking it down from the impressive SD1?

Tiny size. Superb video. Easy to use

Wind noise. Fingers on the mic

Panasonic's SD5 claims the smallest Full-HD 3CCD camcorder crown – but has too much been lost shrinking it down from the impressive SD1?

Panasonic's done it again. The world's smallest Full-HD 3CCD camcorder is also one of the world's best. Modest cutbacks aside, it's a real gem

Panasonic HDC-SD5EG-K

Buying a camcorder is increasingly confusing. Not only do you have to choose between standard and high definition, there are at least four different types of recording format available. Panasonic's HDC-SD5 opts for the relatively new AVCHD, recording...

A dinky AVCHD camcorder, with respectable video performance and a reasonable price.

Panasonic HDC-SD5

Panasonic's ground-breaking HDC-SD1, released earlier this year, wasn't the first video camera to allow HD video recording to truly flash media but it remains the best 3CCD HD solid-state video camera by a mile.

SimplyDV Review: Panasonic HDC-SD5 3CCD AVCHD Camcorder

Back in late 2007, Panasonic took consumer high definition to the next level with its full-HD specification 3CCD AVCHD camcorder capable of recording 1920x1080i video and stills to high-capacity SD cards

The HDC-SD5 is pitched at the home movie maker who's looking to shoot and playback high definition movie clips in all the usual domestic situations such as recording the development of a new baby to capturing events like holiday vacations, holiday...

As with the Sony HDR-CX7K, this is a solid product let down by the price of its recordable media. We'd therefore recommend it to people who already own a large collection of SD cards (or an even larger wallet).

3CCD sensor, 1920x1080 resolution, attractive looks

SDHC memory cards are expensive, a few niggles in the design

Product Specifications

The SD5 features Advanced O.I.S. and the 3CCD camera system. Advanced O.I.S. prevents blurry images caused by unsteady hands as you shoot, so images are clear, sharp and beautiful when displayed on a big TV screen. The 3CCD camera system is used in most professional broadcasting equipment because it draws out the full potential of the camera's high image quality. One of the functions, called Pre-Rec, simplifies shooting and prevents mistakes. Pre-Rec records the image for 3 seconds before you even start shooting, so you're sure to capture unexpected actions that you would otherwise miss. Intelligent Contrast Control helps render natural-looking, highly nuanced images with proper contrast. The USB Host function lets you use a DVD burner 1 to copy and play recorded images in their original AVCHD format. The data can also be easily edited on a PC by using the included software, and the finished result can be saved onto a DVD disc or other media in either AVCHD or MPEG-2 format.
