Panasonic HDC-SD1 High Definition SD Camcorder

The Panasonic HDC-SD1 high definition camcorder ditches tapes for SD cards - is the future of camcorders here?

The HDC-SD1 is a fantastic cutting edge piece of technology that finally does away with the need for tapes. It's small and light, delightfully easy to use and most of all takes superb high definition images. The AVCHD codec means that few editing...

Panasonic HDC-SD1 review

Panasonic's HDV arrival is markedly different from Sony's

Great picture performance in highest HD setting ; Easy to use quickly ; Dolby 5.0 channel surround sound

No SD mode or viewfinder

Brilliant performance, great handling - and even with all those features, it's still really easy to use

The new format on the block allows Panny's slimmed-down AVCHD camcorder to save HD video to teeny SD cards

Panasonic HDC-SD1

We were initially sceptical about the concept of a camcorder that records HD (high-definition) video to an SD (secure digital) card. What kind of compression is going on to make so much data fit into such a small amount of storage space? Our doubts...

The Panasonic is perhaps a little ahead of its time, and is currently quite hard to find in the UK. However, the technology works brilliantly and, as soon as there's some decent software available that'll allow you to make use of its fantastic...

HDC-SD1 review

We were sceptical about a camcorder that records high-definition video onto an SD Card. The Panasonic HDC-SD1, however, captures (and stores) video of exceptional quality for a sub-£1,000 model. Yet, the compression format it uses introduces a...

Very small size. Relatively high-quality video

Few manual controls. No pro audio inputs. Limited editing support in major video applications

SimplyDV Review: Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD 3CCD High Definition video camera

This is a superb little solid-state, consumer-orientated, high definition video camera that will set the standard against which all other models will be compared for the forseeable future.

The current editing limitations are significant, but once the software catches up, the Panasonic HDC-SD1 will be an excellent camcorder.

Captures and stores video of exceptional quality, 5.1 channel audio

Compression format means you can't edit video yet, limited included software

Panasonic HDC-SD1 review

One advantage of using flash memory cards as a recording medium in camcorders is that they facilitate smaller designs. The body of Panasonic's 1.1-pound HDC-SD1, which records high-definition 1,440x1,080 AVCHD video to SD cards, is a mite smaller than...

Generally high-quality video and decent stills; nice manual feature set.

Sluggish autofocus; poor automatic white balance; uncomfortable design with some poor feature implementations.

A solid SD-based camcorder, the Panasonic HDC-SD1 nevertheless suffers from a few performance issues and an annoying design.

Panasonic HDC-SD1

I was skeptical about a camcorder that records high-definition video onto an SD Card. What kind of compression is going on behind the scenes to make it fit? My doubts soon faded--the Panasonic HDC-SD1 captures (and stores) video of exceptional quality....

Excellent video quality ; HDMI and component ports

No video editing app supports its capture format ; Included software is rough and limited

The video from this HD camcorder looks great, but few video-editing applications will let you edit its output.

Panasonic HDC-SD1

The HDC-SD1 was the smallest and lightest camcorder we tested, and the easiest one to use. It offers few buttons to confuse you and no viewfinder, but wait a minute—that's a frickin' 3-inch viewscreen, which seems huge compared to the others'...

Small, light, easy to use. Super-sharp res, kickin' image stabilization

Low-light a tad grainy; slightly bluish video with auto white balance

And to think, 40 minutes of crisp, clean video fits onto that tiny 4GB SDHC flash memory card at the camera’s highest quality setting. The best news of all is the rock-bottom street price—we’ve seen this bauble selling for just north of $800. Remarkable.
