Panasonic HDC-HS100

The recent wave of affordable, tapeless HD camcorders has been very welcome, but somewhat lacking in features for video users previously accustomed to such things as manual focus rings, microphone inputs, dedicated outputs and viewfinders. Panasonic's...

Panasonic HDC-HS100 HD review

However, the £799 Panasonic HDC-HS100 has only narrowed, not closed, the image-quality gap between its own video and that of the top HD camcorders in its class. If you disregard image quality, the HS100 is a clear winner - but it's hard to ignore a...

If the images from Panasonic's HDC-HS100 equaled the camcorder's great handling and usability, this model would be a clear winner. The HS100 provides the best controls we've seen in a small HD camcorder, but the images lag behind those of AVCHD...

Panasonic HDC-HS100

James takes a closer look at Panasonic's hard disk-based HDC-HS100 camcorder.

In pure technical terms, the HDC-SD100 is more of an achievement than the HDC-HS100, considering how much it packs into such a small chassis. But the HS100’s 60GB hard disk is likely to have wider appeal, considering it only comes at a £50 price...

Panasonic HDC-HS100 review: Panasonic HDC-HS100

Full set of manual controls; EVF.

Middling video quality; some annoying design quirks.

Though it has a nice feature set for the price, the Panasonic HDC-HS100 doesn't deliver the quality of video you expect from an HD camcorder in its price segment.

Panasonic HDC-HS100 HD Camcorder

This Panasonic high-def camcorder offers great usability and control, but its image quality is merely decent.

Best-in-class handling and manual control

Flawed low-light performance ; Oversaturated color

On the software side, Panasonic bundles HD Writer 2.6E, a limited but functional Windows-only editing application. Mac users can edit the HS100's AVCHD video with iMovie '08. On either platform you'll want to use a computer built around a 2-GHz Intel...

In our roundup of high-definition camcorders for our December 2008 print issue, we called the Panasonic HDC-HS9 a disappointment, mainly because of its lackluster image quality. I'm glad to say that the newer Panasonic HDC-HS100 HD camcorder is a...

Panasonic HDC-HS100 Camcorder Review - Panasonic Hybrid Camcorders

The Panasonic HDC-HS100, though it was announced only a few weeks ago, is an anticipated camcorder. Many years ago, Panasonic ruled the roost for power users and budget videographers. The Panasonic PV-GS400 was the king of them all, so loaded with...

Product Specifications

Panasonic carefully crafted the HDC-HS100 so you wouldn't have to accept any compromise in the images you shoot. This remarkable HD camcorder lets you capture artistically beautiful images with superb detail and deep, vivid colors. It gives you the advanced creative control you need to capture images just the way you see them in your mind's eye. And it's super-easy to use, with instant automatic settings for capturing perfect shots in almost any situation. With the HDC-HS100 camcorder, Panasonic gives you a tool for making videos that you'll enjoy creating today and viewing for years to come. Panasonic HD camcorders record high full-HD images - the highest level of HD quality there is. Viewed on an HDTV, the pictures are so sharp and clear that you can even distinguish textures. That's the kind of image quality you want when capturing special moments - the kind of moments that will only come once, but that you'll want to enjoy forever. When it comes to capturing beautiful images, an HD camcorder is the best choice. And when it comes to HD camcorders, make Panasonic your choice. The HDC-HS100 features Panasonic's the 3MOS sensor. With about 22 times the light-receiving area of a CCD sensor, this high-sensitivity, high-precision imaging element captures vibrant, faithful color and provides outstanding performance in low lighting. The 3MOS system uses separate MOS sensors to capture the red, green and blue light components, so no light is wasted. You capture rich, expressive video with vivid colors and super-fine details that make your images come alive. The manual ring gives you easy, fingertip control over the focus, zoom and exposure settings. You'll find using the ring a much more intuitive, comfortable, user-friendly process than accessing a menu screen. With the manual ring and manual operation, the HDC-HS100 is a pleasure to use and gives you the freedom to craft unusually expressive images. In IA (Intelligent Auto) mode the image stabilization, contrast correction and face detection functions are automatically activated. Panasonics advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) suppresses the effects on hand-shake as you shoot. Switch the power on and the HDC-HS100 is in standby mode in just 1.9 seconds3, ready to shoot when you are and the clever Pre-Rec Function records three seconds of images before you actually begin shooting. These images are held temporarily in the camcorders internal memory, before recording onto the SDHC/SD memory card or hard disk begins. This helps ensure that you won't miss the start of a moment you want to record, such as when an event begins all of a sudden.
