GoPro Hero5 Session review

A powerful miniature masterpiece, but it's fiddly to use

Extremely portable ; Excellent video and image quality ; Robust, and waterproof to 10m without a case ; Lightweight ; Voice controlled

Diminutive package is fiddly ; Controls are challenging ; Poor battery life

Video quality is second to none, 10MP still imagery will be good enough for most, and the tiny package makes it the perfect companion on your travels. The lack of a replaceable battery is a downer, as is the slightly confusing one-button interface, but...

GoPro Hero 5 Session

The Hero 5 Session sees the return of the cubic form factor that GoPro debuted with last year's Hero Session (originally launched as the Hero 4 Session). But where the Hero Session initially struggled to find its footing, launching at the same price as...

GoPro Hero 5 Session review: Size doesn’t matter

The super-portable GoPro Hero 5 Session isn't quite the Hero 5 Black all-rounder, but is still a touch above the rest

Video recording at max 4K resolution ; Wind noise reduction ; Discreet

Lacklustre still image quality

It’s not quite as well-rounded as GoPro’s Hero 5 Black, but if you’re a little strapped for cash, this is a great buy. However, if you’re not too fussed about 4K video quality and a new microphone, you can now pick up a Hero 4 Session for just £149....

The best thing about the new GoPros isn't the cameras -- it's the software

And don't forget the awesome voice controls and waterproof designs.

Full waterproof design ; Bright, easy to use touchscreen (Hero 5 Black) ; Electronic image stabilization ; Awesome voice controls

GoPro Plus limitations kinda suck ; Auto-upload has some big caveats ; Quik mobile app needs more polish ; Overheat when shooting in 4K

GoPro's latest Hero 5 action cameras up the ante with new waterproof designs, voice controls and software that'll help you create video memories easier and faster.

GoPro Hero5 Session review

The Hero5 Session cuts down on size and weight, without sacrificing video quality.

GoPro Hero5 Session review

GoPro's Session camera got off to a rocky start.

The GoPro Hero5 Session is a big improvement in video and photo quality from the original Hero Session. Additions like voice control, electronic video stabilization and USB-C help justify the $100 price difference.

You'll have to connect to a phone or tablet to see what you're shooting. The built-in battery means that once the battery is drained, you'll have to stop to charge or connect to a power source to keep recording.

The GoPro Hero5 Session brings top-notch features to an already great design.

GoPro Hero5 Session

With the Hero5 Session, GoPro adds 4K video recording to an impressively tiny midrange action camera.

Records 4K footage. Excellent video quality for the size. Waterproof without a case.

No viewfinder. Awkward controls. No external mic support without an adapter.

Conclusions The GoPro Hero5 Session is a major upgrade over the Hero4 Session with the addition of 4K video capture. Footage quality is close to the Hero5 Black, though it lacks that camera's touch screen and some of its shooting modes, including the...

GoPro's Hero5 Black and Session bring overdue improvements

The Hero5 Black adds some much-needed features that make it feel like the most mature action camera we've seen yet. That said, some of the additions, like GPS, don't bring too much to the table just yet. Overall, though, it's an improved experience...

Shoots 4K video ; Voice commands work well ; Includes electronic image stabilization

Moderate battery life ; Tiny display makes menu navigation difficult

The cameras are much simpler to use. Heck, more fun to use too -- and getting video and photos out of them is easier than ever. There are still a few areas for improvement, though. I'll never stop wanting more battery life from a GoPro, and I'd love...

GoPro HERO5 Session Review

The GoPro HERO5 Session was announced at the same time as the HERO5 Black, and is intended as an entry-level action camera - or some people may want to consider it as a second camera for the more advanced HERO5 Black. Waterproof to 10 metres (33ft)...

Using the GoPro HERO5 Session takes a little bit of time to get used to - it can be a little fiddly changing between settings because the button setup is so simple.
