Canon MVX350i review

A winner when it comes to size, price and quality, the MVX350i is an excellent choice if you're looking for a compact MiniDV camera and don't mind occasionally fumbling with awkward controls

Very compact ; Vibrant colour ; Big zoom range

Average in low light ; Poor button layout ; Badly placed jog dial

Canon enthusiastically promotes the MVX350i's still-photo capabilities, but while stills are decent by camcorder standards, their quality can't match that of shots from most dedicated still cameras. Brightly lit outdoor images are reasonably good, but...

Canon MVX250i review

A good but undistinguished home-movie camcorder for people on a budget

Lightweight ; Easy to use ; Decent battery life ; Can be used as a Webcam

Average video quality ; Limited software bundle

The auto white balance feature was very accurate and adapted quickly when I went back and forth between different lighting situations. While the image stabilisation worked well, this camera definitely benefits from a tripod

Canon MVX250i DV Camcorder Review

It's a top-loader! A well-balanced camcorder with great features without being over-burdened with stuff that people will never use. Image quality is excellent for a single CCD and better-than-expected performance in low light situations. Great...

High-ratio digital zoom is un-necessary, lack of manual control over audio input or exposure. LCD screen could be bigger.

Excellent image quality, acceptably low tape transport noise and a whole host of good features make this a great all-rounder for upgraders and new camcorder users alike. Great value for money.

Canon Elura 90

Good exposure for both video and stills. Built-in flash. 20X optical zoom. Excellent autofocus

Video resolution could be a bit higher. Poor button placement

Sturdy and versatile, this digital camcorder offers shooters very good video quality and decent ease of use. Just don't plan on leaving your digital still camera at home.

The Canon Elura 90 is this year's top of the line model from their middle-of-the-road Elura series. It sports a number of quality Canon features, but does not have a real leg up over its sister models, the Elura 80 and 85.

Canon MVX250i

Canon typically puts out a good digital video camera and for a while had the market fairly well sown up. However, there is now plenty of competition and Canon can no longer just rely on its reputation to keep it at the top. The MVX250i is a mid range...

For example the first few frames shot at the beach had a noticeable bluish tinge, however after a few seconds the colours balanced to more natural hues. There was a similar delay when shooting in night mode; however, once it had adjusted to the light...

Product Specifications

Clever design and great performance mark the 1.33 Megapixel MVX350i as a camcorder you'll love to use. A 20x optical zoom and a host of smart technologies promise stunning video and stills quality. The MVX350i is a camcorder with looks that live up to its performance. Its sleek, stylish body sits comfortably in your palm. Sculpted switches and recessed buttons place all the key controls at your fingertips. Its operation has a natural, intuitive feel, leaving you free to focus on the action. Super-compact and fully featured, the MVX350i features a large 2.5" LCD screen that can be backlit for improved visibility in bright outdoor conditions. If time is of the essence, hit the 'Easy' button for instant 'point-and-shoot' footage. In low light conditions, a Night Mode button switches you into this mode immediately without having to access the menu. Image resolution is consistently sharp thanks to a 1.33 Megapixel CCD. Canon's unique DiGIC DV processor makes colors appear satisfyingly natural with no loss in intensity. Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) suppresses image shake, keeping your footage steady and calm. Precision optics complement the advanced electronics to ensure consistently crisp and clear results. The 20x optical zoom lens has an aspheric element for sharp, high contrast footage. Super Spectra coatings applied to each lens element cut out internal reflections that cause ghosting and flare which can otherwise ruin or wash out your image. The MVX350i has multiple modes and effects. Its Super Night mode with Mini Video Light allows full color shooting even in pitch-black conditions. The widescreeen 16: 9 mode can be used in high-resolution or with EIS for the sharpest results in difficult filming conditions. With the MVX350i, you get a capable digital camera built in. Take stills in the middle of recording video and your footage remains unaffected. A mechanical shutter eliminates the blur found in lesser quality camcorders. Set it to stills mode and you can shoot 3 or 5 frames per second. JPEGs and Motion JPEGs are stored direct onto the SD or MMC memory card, for easy upload to PC via USB. Printing your stills couldn't be simpler. You don't even need a PC; just connect to any PictBridge compliant printer, select the image and within moments have a quality print in your hands.
