Canon MD160

While HD camcorders stay north of £500 and DVD models offer poor compressed images and other inconveniences for Mac owners, the MiniDV tape format has life left in it. Canon makes good, cheap, reliable MiniDV camcorders and the MD160 continues to help...

Long zoom length, Good anti-shake software, Very easy to use, Great, unpretentious family camcorder

Doesn't like strong light, No accessory shoe or external mic port

Affordable, easy to use, no-frills camcorder that's ideal for filming the kids on days out

The MD160 is a thoroughly sensible cam with a stonking zoom and proves that there's life left yet in MiniDV for thrifty bargain hunters

Good quality, easy to use, long zoom

Plastic body, no headphones/external mic

Canon MD160

As the variety of camcorder formats grows ever bigger, the budget-conscious videomaker finds himself with a veritable treasure trove of products from which to choose. Mini DV tape appears to be on the way out...

Good manual features, 16:9 widescreen, Excellent detail, Great value for money

No mic input

If money is a consideration, the MD160 provides the perfect compromise between quality and cost

Canon MD160

Sporting a 1 megapixel CCD and the relatively robust list of standard Canon features, their latest Mini-DV camcorder, the MD160, is another strong ent...

35x zoom, good video quality

Slightly dull colours

Another solid digital video camera from Canon, the MD160 will do all the things you'd expect of an entry level unit and do them well.

Canon MD160

If you're not fussed by HD, or recording to DVD or hard disk, then the MD160 is a perfectly serviceable, if otherwise unremarkable camcorder.

Easy controls ; 35x optical zoom ; Widescreen shooting

Still only an SD camera ; Some manual choices are slow

At AU$699, the MD represents acceptable but not stellar value if you're just starting out in the camcorder market. It is worth bearing in mind that similar models with DVD recording are available for only a slightly larger initial outlay -- even...

Lacking a few features but for simplicity and decent quality, this has to be one of the best value camcorders around

Product Specifications

The MD160 features a superior quality 35x optical zoom lens, allowing users to record distant events with clarity. An Electronic Image Stabilizer (EIS) reduces camera shake, most noticeable when shooting at maximum zoom. A high magnification 1000x digital zoom is also available. Quick Start is a new function that allows users to begin recording almost immediately and is included on the MD160. It can take most camcorders several seconds to be ready to record after being switched on. With Quick Start, however, a camcorder enters Record mode almost instantly. With one push of the dedicated Quick Start button, the camcorder rests in Standby mode, conserving battery power. With one more push of the button, the camcorder is ready to record in approximately a second. Quick Start allows users to capture events they might otherwise miss - a child's first steps, for instance, or a match-winning goal. The MD160 also features digital stills capture. Photos are saved to SD or SDHC (High Capacity) memory cards, allowing more photos to be stored. Short low-resolution movie clips, ideal for web use or for sending via email, can also be recorded to card. The MD160 offers the increased performance of a Megapixel CCD and an additional DV input connection. For users wishing to edit their footage on a computer, a finished movie can be easily recorded back to a MiniDV cassette in the camcorder. This is a perfect way to archive movie projects. Camera-to-camera recording is also possible.
