Panasonic HDC-SD60

Can Panasonic's latest HD camcorder find greater recommendation at the entry level than its predecessors?

Excellent video quality ; Comprehensive range of recording settings

None at this price

Panasonic appears to have finally cracked the lower end of the high definition market. The HDC-SD60 and its siblings don't offer quite the gobsmacking value of Samsung's HMX-R10, but the prices of these models are still extremely good, and their...

Panasonic HDC-SD60 review

HD movies and 5MP stills combine to give this cam plenty of all-rounder potential. But will it hit the heights in all departments?

Great movies and surprisingly good still shots at a very attractive price

Panasonic HDC-SD60 review

The SD60 packs lots of impressive features into its petite shell. The lens benefits from Panasonic's superb Power O.I.S. stabilisation system to counteract camera shake, and has a massive 25x zoom range. A so-called Intelligent Zoom function extends...

Competitive picture quality, a great collection of features and a price that should appeal to the masses

Panasonic HDC-SD60

Look closely at Panasonic's impressive new SD60 and you'll discover features you won't find on last year's models. In many respects, the SD60 picks up where the popular SD20 left off. For a start, Panasonic has at last provided a larger 1/4in Cmos...

There's one noticeable omission from the new model: a remote control. This isn't good because it makes it awkward to control the camera when showing off clips on an HDTV when you're slumped in your favourite armchair. That said, if you're importing its...

Panasonic HDC-SD60

The HDC-SD60 has a nice manual feature set and good performance, as well as solid video quality for its class.

Manual shutter-speed and iris controls ; Comfortable size ; Smarter-than-average autofocus ; Lens focuses relatively closely ; Decent battery life

Soft video ; Cramped, low-resolution touchscreen

Panasonic HDC-SD60 First Impressions Camcorder Review

Panasonic really went to town updating the internal specs for its new mid-range HD camcorder line. The HDC-SD60 features a larger, 1/4.1-inch CMOS sensor, and it includes a 25x optical zoom lens (up from 16x on last year's models).

Most of Panasonic's updates with the HDC-SD60 took place under the hood. We're very excited to test the camcorder with its new 1/4.1-inch CMOS sensor and we should see some stronger results over last year's models. The HDC-SD20 (the predecessor model...

Panasonic HDC-SD60K

This camcorder is ideal if portability is important to you.

This Panasonic device features face recognition technology

The LCD display screen is small on this HDV camcorder

We liked the Panasonic HDC-SD60K and it offers users a nice, compact size, buttons and controls and gorgeous zoom capabilities. This is a simple HDV camcorder, that will get the job done but with less advanced technology.

Product Specifications

The compact, stylish SD60 records onto an SDXC, SDHC, or SD memory card. The SD60 employs Intelligent Resolution technology and is equipped with Crystal Engine Pro, which helps to record extremely clear, crisp motion images that exceed even Full-HD 1920 x 1080-pixel images in quality. It eliminates the color smear that tends to occur at subject edges and renders sharp, beautiful images. Advances in the imaging engine also provide Full-HD 1920 x 1080-pixel recording in all recording modes, including HE mode. The O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), which uses gyrosensors to detect hand-shake and moves a corrective lens to adjust the optical axis and eliminate blurring, has further evolved. While the conventional O.I.S. system could not sufficiently eliminate low-frequency hand-shake, the Power O.I.S. is able to correct it about five times more effectively. The O.I.S. also features an Active mode to assure clear, beautiful images across the entire range from wide angle to telephoto. The wide-angle lens is especially convenient for recording indoors or in tight spaces. It makes it possible to shoot at a close distance from the subject while fitting both the subject and the surrounding area into the frame. This has the added benefit of allowing the voice of the subject to be clearly recorded, which is an important element in video recordings. The lens captures beautiful images of wide landscapes and allows large groups of people to fit into the frame. The iA function includes face recognition feature that recognizes the faces of previously registered subjects, and automatically optimizes the focus and exposure for those special people. It continues to track the subject as he or she moves anywhere within the LCD frame, making it ideal for video shooting. It is extremely useful for capturing someone's face in a group. Names can also be registered and displayed on the LCD while shooting. A total of six people can be registered, and up to three people at a time can be detected when shooting.
