Toshiba HD-E1 review

Flying in the face of current inflationary trends Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD deck has recently had its price cut. A step-up model which adds 1080p output to the HD-E1 will soon be on sale for £450

Cheaer than Blu-ray ; Great icture quality

No 5.1 analogue oututs ; Poor remote

Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player review

2007 is going to be the year of high definition, or so we are told, and with that, Toshiba has finally waded in with two players in the UK that are capable of playing back its next generation HD DVD discs. Although this is the first generation of...

Picture quality, styling, playback standard DVDs

Format war question, no 1080p playback

Amazing, affordablish, but hindered by a format war

Toshiba HD-E1 review

While it lacks advanced features and is very slow to respond, the HD-E1 is the first standalone high-definition movie player that feels like it's worth the money. With excellent picture quality, a large selection of movies already available and...

Superb HD pictures ; Good DVD upscaling ; Much more affordable than a Blu-ray player ; Slim design

Lethargic operating times ; No 1080p ; No analogue surround sound output

Sound quality is also excellent, although again we have very little to compare it to. Effects are livelier than with regular Dolby Digital, so we look forward to hearing more of Dolby Digital Plus and True HD in the future

Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD Player

Toshiba throws the cat among the pigeons with a surprisingly affordable HD DVD player.

Toshiba has really raised the bar with the HD-E1, producing a high quality HD DVD player at a very affordable price. Although £350 is a lot of money to many people, considering that a Blu-ray player will cost you well over twice as much, the HD-E1 is a...

The first HD-DVD player we tested, this high-definition disc spinner is now showing its age…

Often brilliant, occasionally frustrating, this is an intriguing early stab at the high-definition-disc future. It's by no means complete, but if you fancy dipping a toe in the HD water without blowing a fortune, it could still be worth a go

Toshiba HD-E1

This second-gen HD-DVD player's one or two flaws are outweighed by its excellent picture quality and streamlined design.

Superb HD pictures; good DVD upscaling; slim design

Lethargic operating times; not 1080p-compatible; no analog surround sound output

While it lacks advanced features and is very slow to respond, the HD-E1 is the first standalone high-definition movie player that feels and looks like a modern disc player.

Flying in the face of current inflationary trends Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD deck has recently had its price cut. A step-up model which adds 1080p output to the HD-E1 will soon be on sale for £450

Cheaper than Blu-ray, Great picture quality

No 5.1 analogue outputs, Poor remote

This HD DVD player couples an eye-opening price with some great pictures, making it a serious player in this new market

Review: Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player

The UK's first HD DVD player is finally here. We had a look to see how it measures up to its big Blu-ray rival...

Good value, generally fine picture quality and superb DVD upscaling

Lacks full-range outputs for HD audio, disc quality is variable and the format war is far from over

HDMI is also used by the HD-E1 to output HD DVD images or to upscale normal DVD to 720p or 1080i levels. The relatively stripped down player also supports CD playback but little else (no SACD, DVD-Audio, MP3 or DivX) and of course it won't play Blu-ray...

Picture and sound quality are absolutely fantastic. Can't fault it,s perfomance

Slow loading but who cares it's worth the wait

I chose hd over blueray for a number of reasons mainly price and the fact that hd dvd is region free while bluray is region coded . i suspect in a few years they will have better hd dvd players , cheaper bluray or dual format machine with better...
