This is Blu-ray on a budget, but Samsung's latest is anything but basic. Already spotted for as little as £140 online, the BD-P1600 is the successor to the brand's popular BD-P1500. And it's a worthy successor, adding some nice extra features at a...
BD-Live, Wi-Fi possibilities, DivX playback, USB hubs
Wi-Fi dongle is a £50 upgrade, no home networking
BD-Live is a bit messy and the Wireless dongle costs more than it should, but the BD-P1600 gives a good picture performance
It also claims to play DivX HD files, a unique prospect for any disc player as far as we know. The BD-P1600 is also a Profile 2.0 BD-Live deck. Fitted with an Ethernet port to link to a broadband router, it’s also Wi-Fi ready, with a Samsung USB dongle...

The optional Wi-Fi dongle makes connecting this player up to your Wi-Fi network a cinch
Fast loading times; BD Live; Good value; Decent pictures
Odd design; Tricky BD Live setup process; Can't stream digital media

The Samsung BD-P1600 delivers very good-looking Blu-ray playback and adds a host of multimedia goodies previously found only in higher-end Samsung models, including BD-Live and Pandora streaming to your TV and home-theatre sound system.
The Samsung BD-P1600 produces very good images, and by Blu-ray standards it's as fast as lightning. But problems with upscaling DVDs and some unwise design decisions prevent it from being a great player.

With ultra-fast loading times, Samsung's latest budget Blu-ray spinner looks set to impress – can it deliver?
The BD-P1600 produces a decent picture, but its biggest pull is without doubt the rapid loading times

The BD-P1600 produces an agreeable picture, but the biggest pull of this player is undoubtedly the speedy loading times
Rapid at loading Blu-ray discs; solid Blu-ray and DVD picture performance; easy to use
Could sound more entertaining; doesn't produce the cleanest budget picture we've seen
By Matthew Moskovciak (asia.cnet.com)
This entry-level Blu-ray exceeded most of our expectations in picture quality and overall system responsiveness.
Excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies; speedy load times and operational speed; Profile 2.0-compliant; onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio; Wi-Fi upgradeable
Design marred by annoying flip-down panel
The Samsung BD-P1600 has a great mix of features and performance for a standalone Blu-ray player, with only its annoying design holding it back.

As you would expect the BD-P1600 supports full HD Blu-Ray playback and it will also play standard definition DVDs upscaled to whichever resolution you choose. You can connect USB memory sticks to allow for storage of any Blu-Ray Live content made...
This means that you can update the firmware of the player via your home wireless network as well as use the connection to download Live content. There is also a built-in Ethernet port for wired internet connectivity.

The only difference with remotes on older Samsung players is that it has adopted the look of current TV remotes. Otherwise, we're in keeping with the "Samsung philosophy", namely large buttons that are not necessarily very aesthetic but which are...
DivX compatible (in SD only)
Audible fan ; No adjustment of subtitle synchronisation ; No 7.1 analogue audio outs ; No AVCHD via USB
The BD-P1600 is well placed among entry-level players. You do find better machines of course, but they also cost more.
The main buttons are phosphorescent, so you'll be able to find them when the lights are out!
